17Թ

For students at the 17Թ, the decision to enroll often begins with one powerful word: yes. Behind that yes, are stories of hope, resilience and opportunity—made possible by the generosity of alumni and donors.

Scholarships at USD are more than financial support. They are bridges between dreams and reality—pathways that turn aspirations into achievements. They allow students to focus on learning, lead with purpose and grow into the people they’re meant to become. Scholarships also foster a deep sense of community, connecting current students with a powerful alumni network that continues to support, inspire and uplift long after graduation.

A Catalyst for Change

Scholarships are a top priority for USD, central to its mission to provide access to a high-quality education for students from all walks of life. They ease financial pressure, unlock potential and allow students to envision futures they may not have otherwise considered.

“Scholarships are one of our most powerful tools for recruiting, retaining and empowering the next generation of leaders,” said Sheila K. Gestring, president of the 17Թ. “They allow us to bring in talented, driven students who may not otherwise be able to afford a college education—and they help those students thrive.”

In 2025, 87.3% of first-time students at public universities relied on financial aid. *At USD, 82.8% of first-time, full-time freshmen received scholarships or grants. The trend reflects a broader reality on campus, where many students depend on financial assistance to afford the cost of attendance.

The impact is clear: Students who receive aid are more likely to stay enrolled, graduate, take on leadership roles and remain engaged—both at USD and in their communities after graduation.

By easing financial burdens, scholarships allow students to invest in personal development and practical learning experiences—exploring internships, conducting research, volunteering in their communities and fully embracing college life.

Student Voices

Every scholarship carries a story. Meet two students whose USD experience has been shaped by the generosity of others.

Finiasi Epapy - First-Generation Trailblazer

For Finiasi Epapy, a first-generation college student, receiving a scholarship changed the course of his life.

"Applying for scholarships was a life-changing decision," said Epapy. "It eliminated the financial burden for me and my family. I've been able to prioritize academics and make the dean's list every semester since."

The support also gave him something deeper—a sense of belonging.

"Receiving a scholarship made me feel connected to the university," he said. "It made me feel like I belonged at USD. It has inspired me to look for ways I can make a positive impact here in 17Թ."

Today, he is committed to staying in 17Թ and helping others find their own path forward.

Tiffany Pelton - Student Leader & Changemaker

For Tiffany Pelton, scholarships meant more than staying enrolled—they meant being fully immersed in the college experience.

"Scholarships are not just financial support; they are a reminder that someone believes in you," she said.

Freed from the need to juggle multiple jobs, Pelton embraced campus life. She joined Alpha Phi, became president of the National Society of Leadership and Success, and found her voice in service and leadership.

"Being a candidate for scholarships solidified my decision to stay in 17Թ," she said. "I've been able to attend athletic events, join clubs and thrive at USD. Scholarships mean so much to not only me, but also to my family—who get to watch me grow."

Why Scholarships Make USD the Right Choice

Scholarships do more than make education affordable—they make it possible. They open doors to meaningful choices: where to study, what to pursue and how to make an impact.

They help USD attract a diverse, ambitious student body and build a community where students can flourish. And their influence doesn’t stop at graduation. Many recipients choose to stay in 17Թ, bringing their energy and ideas back to the communities that raised them.

“Scholarships don’t just change individual lives, they impact the quality of 17Թ’s workforce,” said Gestring. “They create an opportunity for developing the future leaders of our communities.”

With continued support, more students will have the opportunity to invest in themselves and become the changemakers of tomorrow.

“Scholarships allowed me to say yes to everything USD had to offer,” said Pelton. “They helped me believe I was worthy, capable and seen."

Maximizing Change

The Coyote Beginnings Fund is a general scholarship fund that helps bridge gaps in students' financial aid—regardless of major or department. It keeps support with the students, empowering them to pursue their dreams and prepare for meaingful careers.

Thanks to the Ellis Impact, established by USD alumnus Gary Ellis '78 and Sue Ellis, your gift will be matched dollar for dollar, up to a set amount. By maximizing available scholarship funds, the Ellis Impact ensures more students can access an affordable, transformative education and begin their journey as Coyotes.

"Education has been a transformative force in my life, and Sue and I believe every student should have access to the same experience," said Gary Ellis. "The Ellis Impact is our way of giving back to USD and helping future generations of Coyotes achieve their goals while hopefully inspiring others to join us in making a difference."
